🧾 Ingredient notes

Ingredients needed to make vegan Caesar dressing.

Garlic - Fresh is best, but if you're in a hurry, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder works too.

Capers - I use them as a substitute for anchovy paste in classic Caesar dressing. If you don't like or can't find capers, just leave them out or add more vegan Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce.

Dijon mustard - Most Caesar dressing recipes call for Dijon mustard, but you can use yellow mustard as a substitute if needed.

Vegan Worcestershire Sauce - It is my preferred choice, but if you can't find it or prefer not to make it homemade, you can use an equal amount of soy sauce (or tamari as a gluten-free alternative).

Nutritional yeast - I use it as a substitute for Parmesan cheese, but you can use any vegan cheese instead (my Vegan Parmesan Cheese works great in this recipe).

If you can't find nutritional yeast, you could use brewer's yeast instead or simply omit it.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

📋 Variations

Here are some variations you can try to customize your dressing:

  • Add avocado. Incorporate half a ripe avocado into the dressing for an even creamier texture and a smooth, delicious flavor.
  • Incorporate fresh herbs. Add a pinch of finely chopped fresh herbs like basil, parsley, or cilantro to bring a fresh and aromatic touch to the dressing.
  • Include chipotle. Add a teaspoon of chipotle adobo sauce for a smoky and spicy kick to the dressing. Adjust the amount based on your spice preference.
  • Smoked Paprika. Incorporate a pinch of smoked paprika to give the dressing a smoky undertone and an extra depth of flavor.
  • Roasted Garlic. Roast a few cloves of garlic before adding them to the dressing for a rich and caramelized garlic flavor.

Step 2: Blend until smooth and use it immediately as a dressing for a vegan Caesar salad or any other salad or as a dip.

💭 Expert tips

  1. Marinate for better flavor. Refrigerate the dressing for at least 1 hour after making it to let the flavors meld and intensify.
  2. Chill for a thicker texture. Refrigerate the dressing to achieve a thicker consistency and a more desirable texture.
  3. Adjust to taste. Adjust the dressing according to your preferences by adding more ingredients or seasonings as needed.
  4. Consistency. For a thicker dressing, add more vegan mayo. For a lighter dressing, thin it with extra water.
  5. Adjust the acidity. For a tangier dressing, increase lemon juice. For milder acidity, reduce lemon juice or dilute with water.

❓Recipe FAQs

How long does vegan Caesar dressing last?

It typically lasts for up to 5 days when stored in the fridge in an airtight container.

However, it's important to check for any signs of spoilage, such as off odors, mold, or changes in texture, before consuming. If you notice any of these signs, it's best to discard the dressing to ensure food safety.

Can I make vegan Caesar dressing ahead of time?

Yes, you can definitely make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge. It's actually a great idea as it allows the flavors to meld and develop over time.

Simply prepare the dressing according to the recipe, transfer it to an airtight container, and refrigerate.

The dressing will typically stay fresh for up to 5 days. Before using, give it a good stir or shake to recombine any separated ingredients.

Can I freeze vegan Caesar dressing?

Yes, you can freeze it, but the texture and consistency may change upon thawing. It's best to consume it within 1 to 2 months and whisk or blend it well after thawing to restore consistency.

What goes well with vegan Caesar dressing?

It complements Caesar salads perfectly, adds flavor to roasted vegetables, makes a delicious marinade for tofu or tempeh, and enhances wraps and sandwiches.

It also adds creaminess to veggie bowls, elevates steamed or roasted potatoes, pairs well with veggie burgers, and makes a tasty dipping sauce for veggies, crackers, and fries.

Why isn't Caesar dressing vegan?

Traditional Caesar dressing is not vegan because it typically contains anchovies, which are fish. The classic recipe also includes ingredients like Parmesan cheese and eggs.

However, you can easily create a recipe that is free of animal-derived ingredients, making it cholesterol-free. Plant-based diets have been shown to lower total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels when compared to omnivorous diets.
