Learn how to make powdered sugar in 1 easy step. It's so sweet, light, and fluffy, and it's made with only 2 ingredients in just 2 minutes!

Photo of a bowl and a spoonful of powdered sugar

Have you ever wondered how to make powdered sugar? I always used to buy it from the grocery store, as I wasn't sure if I would be able to prepare it myself. Turns out it is SO easy I still can't believe it!

It is simply ground granulated sugar with a little bit of cornstarch. Although not everyone uses cornstarch, it really gives it its good consistency, and it doesn't affect the sugar's flavor at all.

Besides, you can use this sweet ingredient to make plenty of different baking and pastry recipes. And by making it at home you can be assured that it does not contain any additives or preservatives!

Learn how to make powdered sugar with this easy recipe. It really is super simple and affordable, and to make it you only need 2 ingredients and just 2 minutes of your time!

How to make powdered sugar - Step by step

Step-by-step photos of how to make this recipe
  • Add the granulated sugar and cornstarch to a powerful blender or a food processor (photo 1).
  • Pulse until the mixture has the powdery consistency of powdered or confectioners' sugar (photo 2). Stir with a spatula to make sure it is all getting blended.
  • Use your powdered sugar in your favorite baking recipes.

Pro tips

  • Remember to use sugar that is labeled vegan and hasn’t been filtered through bone char.
  • Although cornstarch is optional, it will keep the sugar dry, so I really suggest you use it.
  • You could also make this recipe with other types of sugar.

Is confectioners' sugar the same as powdered sugar?

Yes, it is the same! The only thing that changes is the name, as confectioners' sugar and powdered sugar are exactly the same thing.

How to store

If stored properly, it will keep in good condition indefinitely. So remember to keep it in an airtight container in a dark, dry, and cool place.

How to use

There are plenty of ways of using this kind of sugar. The most common is to use it for decorating sweet recipes, but you could also make some icings or frostings with it.

If you'd like to make recipes like applesauce, chia pudding, banana milk, or vegan donuts, I suggest you use regular sugar, as the cornstarch might change their consistency. However, you can try it and see if it works for you!

Just remember, there are people with corn allergies. Potato startch or tapioca work for those with corn allergies, like my husband.

Absolutely does NOT work! And I have a super powerful blender. Sugar is still very grainy (granulated) afterward. Best bet is to continue to buy ALREADY powdered sugar.
