This vegan buttercream frosting is out of this world! I absolutely love it, as it is sweet and extra creamy. I made it because I wanted to try a new cupcake recipe but I realized I didn't have any vegan frosting on hand.

When I first tried it I didn't know it would be such a simple yet extremely satisfying recipe. It turns out SO delicious I'm sure I'll be making it over and over again to add it to all my desserts.

In any case, this recipe is super delicious and perfect to enjoy with any kind of vegan cupcakes that you can serve during your social events. Everyone will live for them!

How to make vegan buttercream frosting - Step by step

Step-by-step photos of how to make this recipe
  • Add the vegan butter to an electric mixer bowl (photo 1) and beat until light and fluffy (photo 2). You could also use a regular large bowl and a hand mixer.
  • Then add the vanilla extract (photo 3) and beat once more (photo 4).
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, ½ cup (120 g) at a time (photo 5), and continue mixing until thick and creamy (photo 6).
  • Serve your vegan buttercream frosting immediately and use it to frost vegan cupcakes.

Pro tips

  • This recipe makes enough frosting for about 12 cupcakes or to frost an 8 or 9-inch two-layer cake (20-23 cm).
  • You need to use softened vegan butter, but not melted. This is really important or the vegan frosting won’t get the proper consistency.
  • Make sure the sugar you’re using is vegan. I prefer to buy vegan granulated sugar and make my own powdered sugar.
  • If your vegan frosting is too thick or crumbly, add a little bit of unsweetened plant milk (soy milk is my favorite one). You want your frosting to be very thick so it will hold its shape once on the cupcakes. If your frosting is too thin, just add more powdered sugar until thickens.

What is vegan buttercream frosting?

It is an amazing ingredient that will make all your sweet desserts (especially your vegan cupcakes) absolutely delicious, as well as beautiful. And as it's made with 100% plant-based ingredients, it is completely cholesterol-free.

How long will this vegan buttercream frosting last?

You can keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. It will firm up when it's cold, so let it soften at room temperature before frosting cupcakes or cakes with it.

Serving suggestions

There are plenty of ways of using this vegan frosting. However, I usually use it to frost recipes like vegan vanilla cupcakes or vegan carrot cake.
