Berry compote is an ideal recipe to eat with any kind of sweet foods. If you like fruit, this compote will give a delicious taste to all your favorite dishes, as well as plenty of vitamins and antioxidants.

I made this compote with strawberries and blueberries, but you can incorporate all the fruits you'd like. Besides, I didn't add any sugar, but feel free to add the sweetener you prefer.

This recipe is wonderfully good and it's so fruity, healthy, and nutritious. It's only made with natural and inexpensive ingredients you can find at any grocery store. Also, it's very easy to prepare and is ready in 15 minutes.

To make this berry compote you only need a pot and a potato masher to mash the fruit. If you're looking for a creamier texture you can blend it, but I used a masher because I like a more liquid texture.

How to make berry compote - Step by step

Step by step photos of how to make berry compote
  • Put all the ingredients together in a saucepan (photo 1) and cook over medium heat until it boils.
  • After that, cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally (photo 2).
  • Mash the fruit with a spoon, a fork, or a potato masher (photo 3). You can also blend it.
  • Feel free to add sugar or any kind of sweetener to taste.
  • Serve immediately or let it cool. Keep it in a jar or an airtight container (photo 4).

Pro tips

  • You can either use fresh or frozen fruit, although I like it better when I use seasonal fresh fruit.
  • Feel free to incorporate more fruit or use any type of fruit you have on hand.
  • If your compote becomes too watery, add 1 teaspoon of chia seeds after it's done.
  • You can also incorporate other spices like ground cinnamon, ground or fresh ginger, vanilla extract, lemon or orange zest, etc.
  • Sugar is optional.

How to serve berry compote

You can eat your berry compote with plenty of different dishes. Serve it with French toasts, vegan ice cream, vegan pancakes, or even vegan waffles. Serve your favorite sweet recipes with this vegan compote for a delicious fruity taste.

Can I freeze this berry compote?

Yes, you can, but make sure it's cold before putting it into the freezer. You can either freeze it in individual portions or all the batch together.

To defrost, keep it at room temperature or in the fridge for a few hours or until thaw. You can also heat it up in a saucepan over medium-low heat. It will last in in the freezer for up to 1 month.

How long will this berry compote last?

It is important to keep the leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge so the compote keeps all its properties. It will last in the fridge for 7-10 days.

I am new to vegan and have seen orange juice in several recipes. Do you mean fresh squeezed or concentrate?

#3 in the instructions, I don't see potatoes in the ingredient list. 🙂
