How to make vegan chocolate - Step by step

Step-by-step photos of how to make vegan chocolate
  • Add the cocoa butter to a heat-safe bowl (photo 1). Set aside.
  • Pour a couple of inches of water (about 5 cm) into a saucepan and bring to a boil (photo 2). Then place the bowl on top to create a double boiler (photo 3).
  • Let the cacao butter melt gently over medium heat (photo 4).
  • Once it’s melted, remove from the heat, add all the remaining ingredients (photo 5), and stir until well combined (photo 6).
  • Carefully pour the mixture into a silicone chocolate mold (I used 2 of them) (photo 7).
  • Transfer to the fridge or freezer and allow the chocolate to set.
  • Enjoy your vegan chocolate straight from the fridge or at room temperature (photo 8).

Ingredients and tips

  • Cocoa butter.
  • Maple syrup: to make this recipe you can use any other type of syrup instead. Agave syrup is the best alternative though.
  • Vanilla extract: I always use homemade vanilla extract, as it’s more affordable and extremely easy to make, but the store-bought one is also a good choice.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: you could probably make your chocolate using carob powder, but I’ve never tried it myself. Keep in mind that carob powder is sweeter than cocoa powder, so you may need to add less sugar.

Is dark chocolate vegan?

This is actually is a really common question. Generally speaking, most dark chocolate containing more than 70% of cocoa is usually 100% plant-based.

However, some dark chocolate may contain dairy, so the best way of making sure it doesn't is by checking the ingredients of making it yourself!

Instructions

  • Add the cocoa butter to a heat-safe bowl. Set aside.
  • Pour a couple of inches of water (about 5 cm) into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Then place the bowl on top to create a double boiler.
  • Let the cacao butter melt gently over medium heat.
  • Once it’s melted, remove from the heat, add all the remaining ingredients, and stir until well combined.
  • Carefully pour the vegan chocolate mixture into a silicone chocolate mold (I used 2 of them). You could also use a lined cupcake or muffin tray, or anything you have on hand.
  • Transfer to the fridge or freezer and allow the chocolate to set.
  • Enjoy your vegan chocolate straight from the fridge or at room temperature.
  • Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Notes

  • This recipe yields 2 chocolate barks.
  • Maple syrup can be replaced with any other kind of syrup, but agave syrup is the best choice.
  • Feel free to customize your vegan chocolate with other ingredients, like chopped nuts, chopped dried fruits, or a pinch of salt.
  • If you're looking for more chocolate vegan recipes, here are some of them: vegan hot chocolate, vegan chocolate chip cookies, energy balls, vegan chocolate cake, and vegan mug cake.
  • Prep time doesn’t include the time you need to keep your vegan chocolate in the fridge or freezer to set.

so excited to see this - make my own chocolate? yes, please 🙂 Any thoughts on how to make these chocolate chips? would it easily chip up in a food processor? hammering it with a knife seems like it would be messy. Advice?

I think it could work if you hammer it with a knife! Leave the chocolate in the fridge for a while and then, hammer it!
