🧾 Ingredient notes

Ingredients needed to make vegan apple crumble.

Apples: Granny Smith apples are the best choice for a crumble because they’re tart, firm, and hold their shape well when baked.

If you prefer a sweeter flavor, you can mix in apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji, which add a nice balance of sweetness to the tartness of Granny Smith.

Granulated and Brown Sugar: I used white sugar in the filling to keep the sweetness simple and let the apples stand out, and brown sugar in the topping adds a caramel-like flavor.

You can use just one if you want; brown sugar gives a deeper taste, while white sugar keeps it lighter. Coconut sugar or maple syrup are also great alternatives!

Just make sure your sugar is vegan-friendly!

All-purpose flour: I’ve always made this recipe with all-purpose flour, but it should work with other types too.

If you need a gluten-free option, try using a gluten-free flour blend. Just make sure it’s a 1:1 substitute to keep the texture right.

Vegan Butter: If you don’t have vegan butter, you can swap it for solid coconut oil. It works just as well, giving you a crispy topping with a hint of coconut flavor.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

📋 Variations

  • Add Nuts: Mix in ½ cup (60 grams) of chopped walnuts or pecans into the topping for extra crunch.
  • Oats Topping: Swap ½ cup (60 grams) of the flour for rolled oats to make the topping heartier.
  • Spiced Apples: Add ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg or ginger along with the cinnamon for more depth of flavor.
  • Berry Mix: Add 1 cup (150 grams) of fresh or frozen berries like blueberries or raspberries to the apple filling for a fruity twist.
  • Caramel Drizzle: Drizzle some Vegan Caramel Sauce on top after baking for extra sweetness.

Step 6. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.

💭 Expert tips

  1. Chill The Butter: Make sure your vegan butter is cold before cutting it into the topping. This helps create a crisp, flaky texture.
  2. Peel The Apples: Removing the skins gives a smoother texture. Cut into cubes to avoid uneven cooking and mushiness.
  3. Even Apple Cubes: Cut the apples evenly to ensure they cook properly and don’t end up too soft or undercooked.
  4. Watch The Topping: If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover the dish loosely with foil for the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
  5. Let It Sit Before Serving: Let the crumble sit for 10-15 minutes after baking. This allows the filling to set and makes it easier to serve.

❓Recipe FAQs

How long can vegan apple crumble last in the fridge?

After baking, it will keep in the fridge for about 3 to 5 days.

For best results, store it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap before refrigerating.

Keep in mind that, while it will still be safe to eat after a few days, the texture might get softer and the topping may lose its crispiness.

Can I freeze it?

Yes, you can freeze it!

Make sure to let it cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container or tightly wrapping it in plastic wrap and foil.

It will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

When you're ready to enjoy it, thaw it in the fridge overnight and reheat in the oven for the best texture.

How can I reheat it?

To reheat vegan apple crumble, you have a few options:

In the oven: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (180ºC) and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through.

This method helps maintain the crispness of the topping.

In the microwave: If you're in a hurry, you can microwave individual portions for 30-60 seconds.

Keep in mind the topping may lose some of its crunch.

For the best texture, the oven is the better choice, but both methods work depending on your time.

What is the difference between a cobbler, a crumble, and a crisp?

Cobbler, crumble, and crisp are all delicious baked fruit desserts, but each has its own unique twist.

A cobbler has a fruit filling topped with soft, biscuit-like dough that bakes up light and fluffy, contrasting with the tender fruit below.

A crumble also has a fruit base, but the topping is a mix of flour, butter, and sugar, creating a crumbly, crispy layer when baked.

A crisp is similar to a crumble, but the main difference is that its topping often includes oats, giving it a heartier, crunchier texture.

All three desserts are a fantastic way to enjoy baked fruit with a tasty topping, but it’s the difference in texture that really sets them apart.

What toppings go well with vegan apple crumble?

Here are some delicious toppings that pair perfectly with vegan apple crumble.

A scoop of Vegan Vanilla Ice Cream adds a cool, creamy contrast to the warm crumble.

You can also top it with Vegan Whipped Cream for an extra indulgence or drizzle some Vegan Caramel Sauce for a rich, sweet touch.

For added crunch, sprinkle some toasted walnuts or pecans, or serve it with warm vegan custard for an extra comforting layer.
